BUILDING HISTORY
HOUSING FOR THOSE YOUNG AT HEART
WELCOME TO THE CALVERT
A building spanning two centuries of use, nestled within the diverse neighborhood of Newport’s North End, the former school building serves to provide housing for those young at heart while creating a landmark to the Broadway streetscape. A streetscape that has become well known for welcoming visitors and residents alike into the Port city’s center by way of authentic dining, cultural events, and homegrown entertainment.
Creating a desirable contrast to the neighboring wooden homes of the same
era; the brick façade of both buildings meets the streetscape with large black double-hung windows and distinct molding details restoring the building exterior to its original presence. Entering the building you quickly learn the finishes remain true to the building's bones and original use but have been coupled with the modern conveniences of the 21st century. The original stairwells are infused with fresh updates and modern lighting evoking the excitement of early dismissal. Spacious and softly lit corridors create warmth and openness by means of a sophisticated simple mix of materials, colors, and artwork that spark a collegiate nostalgia.
VINTAGE INSPIRED
Each unit is appointed with subtle experiences of schoolhouse memories starting with the enameled numbers for wayfinding and the vintage-inspired stained wood entry door. Inside a charming mix of black iron & brass lighting hold space for mid-1800 origins of the building, while contemporary polished chrome plumbing fixtures exhibit the current technologies and subtle luxuries of modern life. High ceilings and hardwood floors authenticate the experience of the classroom aesthetic while making the apartments feel like home. Framing these moments are the reclaimed window sills and custom tree halls at the entries, both creations from the original components of the elementary schools slate chalkboards, hooks and structural timbers. These design elements layered with the location and history of the structure inform the curriculum of what will be Newport’s premier residential community.
